A NICE ANECDOTE
New York, 1989
My parents when to visit my sister Helena who was finishing her studies at Columbia University. It was the first time they flew to America. As a passionate admirer of Velazquez, my Dad's first goal was (besides seeing his daughter) to contemplate the portrait of Juan de Pareja, loyal servant of the genial artist. A masterpiece exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was totally excited about that.
When they arrived in the room where the portrait was supposed to be , he found a blank wall instead. The painting had been retired just a few hours before to be sent to a temporary exhibition in another American city. So, the disappointment was huge! My dad was terribly sad, to the point that the room concierge, after talking with my Dad and sister, called the director and explained the situation to him: an Art professor from Barcelona came exclusively to enjoy the painting, and he was completely devastated. As if in a dream, and in only a few minutes, four men came in the room and hung the painting on the wall just for my beloved dad to see it.
The rest of the story is in the photo above ( by my sister). This anecdote would be impossible in our days , but my dad experienced America’s generosity.
